Northwestern Louisiana’s diversity of habitats offers a mix of remnant prairie, bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands, and piney woods. An amazing number of first state records have been found in the region, like Ringed Kingfisher, Gray Flycatcher, Cassin’s Sparrow, and Dusky-capped Flycatcher. It’s also the only region in the state where Bewick’s Wren, Western Meadowlark, Smith’s Longspur, and Harris’ Sparrows regularly occur in winter, and where Bell’s Vireo and Willow Flycatchers are regular breeders (albeit in low numbers).
